8 Ways To Get Rid Of Lizards In Your Commercial Properties

Lizards, or cicaks, are quite a common sight in Malaysia properties (especially in ground floor units). Despite them being harmless, many people are horrified by their appearance and sounds.

How to get rid of lizards? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with these useful tips:

Lizard repellent spray

First, one of the essential ways is using lizard repellent sprays that can be found at most sundry shops and supermarkets. Spray it at the places where lizards always appear to stop them from coming.

Rat glue

Next, you won't notice this could be so useful! You may purchase the rat trap or create your own DIY lizard trap using rat glue.

  • If you buy it, you may find it at Eco Shop or Mr. DIY

  • If DIY, you just simply take pieces of paper or boxes and apply the glue liberally onto the surface

Put these DIY traps in places where you know the lizards are known to wander. The traps can also be hung on ceilings and walls.

Mothballs (Naphtalene)

Sure you will know mothballs! Lizards hate the smell of mothballs, which will stop them from going to those places. Please keep in mind that mothballs often come in various colours, they can be mistaken for candy. Be cautious not to put them in places where children could reach them. You may place mothballs inside your wardrobe or cabinet.

Seal every crack on doors, windows and walls

Hmm.. Lizards usually appear through cracks or fissures in windows, doors and walls. Lizards can easily enter the cracks and also serve as hideouts for lizards.

Seal off any existing cracks or fissures using silicone or urethane. You can seal the top and bottom of doors using weather stripping. This method also keeps other insects from entering the house.

Eggshells

Eggshells are a natural lizard repellent. Place these eggshells where the lizards are often seen. Although it seems weird, there is a good reason why eggshells can be used for pest control. Eggshells contain sulphur that can cause a burning sensation to the lizard’s abdomen. In addition, the smell of sulphur in eggshells is nostalgic of a bird’s beak, the lizard’s natural predator. This discourages lizards from entering an area with eggshells.

Note: Every 3 weeks, you need to renew or replace the eggshells.

Shallots

Another natural stuff, shallots, are an eco-friendly natural lizard repellent. You may cut some shallots and place them where lizards have appeared around. If you do not have shallots, you may use an alternative - garlic.

Vinegar, lemon and chilli powder

Vinegar, lemon and chilli powder can always be found in everyone’s house. The smell of vinegar and lemon can stop the lizards from coming while chilli powder can cause irritation to their skin, eyes, and nose.

You may DIY vinegar, lemon, and chilli powder spray to stop the lizards. Here’s how:

  • Mix the black pepper and chilli powder.

  • Add vinegar and water, stir it.

  • Put all the mixture into a spray bottle.

  • Shake well and spray content onto lizard-infested surfaces.

Lemongrass or lemongrass essential oil

Research has proven lemongrass’ effectiveness as a mosquito repellent. Lizards love to eat mosquitoes, so by reducing the mosquito population, lizards will have difficulty breeding as you’ve gotten rid of their food source. You just need to take some stalks of lemongrass, cut them into pieces and place them around your commercial properties. It may not look so nice when you put the lemongrass at your shop or commercial properties. Or you may use lemongrass essential oil.
